End Of Year Insurance Benefits

Isn’t it amazing how time flies!!!

It feels like yesterday we were celebrating the New Year!!!

As crazy as it seems the end of the year is approaching rapidly and for those whose benefits renew in January, now is the time to use your benefits for any needed treatment. Benefits do not carry over to the next year. If you don’t use them you lose them! Call your insurance as soon as possible to inquire as to what benefits are remaining so you can start or finish up any treatment Dr. Rippe has suggested.

Don’t delay! Everyone’s schedules are very tight towards the end of the year including ours, especially with being closed the last week of December! It is best to call and schedule your dental treatment soon so we can accommodate you to our best ability.

Dry Mouth Can Lead To Tooth Decay

Drymouth is a potential side effect of numerous medications, prescribed andover-the-counter. Among them are antihistamines, decongestants, painkillers,high blood pressure medications, muscle relaxants, drugs for urinaryincontinence, Parkinson’s disease medications, antidepressants and many others.Some of the common problems associated with dry mouth include a sore throat,burning sensation, problems speaking, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness or drynasal passages. If left untreated, dry mouth can severely damage your teeth. Salivalubricates, cleanses, washes away food, and neutralizes the acids in your mouth.Without enough saliva extensive decay can occur as well as other oral problems.Patients using inhalers for asthma often develop oral candidiasis, an oralfungal infection, and are encouraged to rinse their mouths with water afterusing the inhaler. A common aid for dry mouth is sugar-free candy or gumbecause it stimulates saliva flow. Dr. Rippe can also recommend different methodssuch as oral rinses to restore the moisture in your mouth.

Have you ever thought about bleaching your teeth before getting that crown you need?

If your dental treatment requires crowns to be placed, it is a good idea to consider how you feel about the color of your existing teeth before beginning the process. If you like the color of your teeth, Dr. Rippe will then match the crowns to that color. However, if you feel you would like to whiten or lighten your teeth, talk to Dr. Rippe or one of his assistants beforehand about tooth whitening. Once the final crowns are made, it is not possible to change the color without redoing them.

If you want whiter teeth before the crowns are placed, the best way to achieve this is to talk to Dr. Rippe about the different teeth whitening options he offers. Most of our patients prefer our KOR Deep Bleaching System. With this procedure, custom-fitted trays will be made for your teeth and you will be given the syringes of KOR bleaching gel as well as a desensitizer and cotton swabs. Dr. Rippe will show you how to place a small amount of bleach in the tray and then place the tray in your mouth. The tray is then worn over night. The biggest advantage of this method of teeth whitening compared to other bleaching procedures is that you are the one who can control how white your teeth will be. Since you are the one in control, you can stop bleaching when you feel you have achieved your desired color. You can stop there, or your can opt to get even whiter with the in-office max KOR bleaching session. The max KOR session must be done in the office because of its potency and will only work after your at-home bleaching is done. The typical bleaching time is about two weeks, but it may be longer.

KOR Deep Bleaching is low sensitivity bleach however; your teeth may become sensitive to cold air or liquids during the tooth bleaching process. This is normal and will subside and finally go away when you stop bleaching. If sensitivity does arise, the KOR package comes with a desensitizer liquid that can be rubbed on your teeth with a cotton swab before you put your trays in at night, or you can try bleaching every other night. Once you get your teeth to your desired color, Dr. Rippe will have you wait a couple of weeks before taking the final color match of your new white teeth for the final crown restoration. During that time, the color of your teeth will be stabilizing.

Bleaching your teeth is a very predictable method for getting white teeth, but the results may not last forever. Since the restorations were placed when your teeth were at their whitest, you will most likely find that after a while, the restorations may begin to appear lighter than your natural teeth. This result is to be expected. It is not caused by a change in the color of the restorations, but by your own teeth getting darker. In order to maintain your white teeth, it is highly recommended that you bleach at home for a few days every couple of months. You can buy the KOR syringes from our office as needed, and your bleaching trays should last forever. Let Dr. Rippe or any one of our staff know if you have any questions, concerns, or are interested in getting the bleaching process started before your recommended dental treatment.

Regular cleanings with our office promote good oral hygiene, but did you know it can also prevent a multitude of diseases? Your 12 o'clock teeth cleaning may not seem nearly as exciting as lunch with a friend, but it will be well worth it in the end.

Here are 10 really great reasons to stick with your regular cleaning schedule!

1. It Prevents Oral Cancer. You may or may not realize that you're screened for oral cancer during your regular dental cleaning. According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, an American dies of oral cancer every hour of every day. It's a sad proposition, especially when you consider that it is highly curable with early diagnosis.

2. It Wards Off Gum Disease. Gum disease, or an infection in the gum tissues and bone that keep your teeth in place, is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss. Sensitive Smiles

Are your teeth overly sensitive? Millions of adults struggle with hypersensitive teeth, which means they are sensitive to hot and cold temperatures, very sugary or acidic foods and drinks and vigorous tooth brushing. This kind of sensitivity is often called "dentin hypersensitivity."

Dentin is the tissue that makes up the core of each tooth. Above the gum line, dentin is protected with a coating of enamel. Unfortunately, as enamel is worn away or decayed, dentin becomes exposed and receptive to sensations that cause painful nerve responses. This can also occur as the result of receding gums, a common symptom of gum disease.

What causes sensitive teeth? A number of things may be to blame. Over-zealous brushing with a firm bristled tooth brush or abrasive toothpaste can lead to dentin hypersensitivity, as can gum disease, which is the result of poor brushing and flossing habits. Your diet may also play a role, as frequent consumption of acidic foods and drinks can chemically dissolve tooth enamel. Finally, abnormal wear on tooth surfaces from chronic clenching or grinding of teeth, nail biting and chewing on hard objects can lead to sensitive teeth. To avoid the problem, brush and floss daily to maintain healthy gums and protect dentin from exposure. Avoid vigorous brushing with a hard-bristled toothbrush.

If you're already suffering from overly sensitive teeth, your best bet is to contact Dr. Rippe for guidance. In the mean time, there are products that can help. Desensitizing toothpaste used with a soft-bristled toothbrush can help. Toothpaste designed for those with sensitive teeth can reduce the pain associated with the condition after only a few days of use.

Minimize Teeth Grinding

If you had a stressful day and you unleashed your tension by grinding your teeth at night you may have paid the price the next day with a headache. For head and facial pain caused by teeth grinding (bruxism), you can get temporary relief with aspirin or acetaminophen. But that doesn’t get to the root of the problem. For that you’ll want to consult with Dr. Rippe. In the meantime, here are some ways to minimize the daily or nightly grind.

-Avoid stressful thoughts, activities, and movies in the hours before bedtime. You probably don’t realize it, but just before bed is the worst time to pay the bills, watch action movies, or talk about sensitive subjects. If you are stressed with worries, write down things that you need to address the next day.

-Take a long, warm bath before you go to bed. While you’re in the bath — or even when you’re lying in bed - cover your jaw with a hot washcloth. The extra warmth will relax your jaw muscles.

-Practice muscle relaxation before you go to sleep, so tension doesn’t lead you to grind at night. When you’re lying in bed, tense the muscles in your feet then relax your feet. Repeat with your calf muscles, then thigh muscles, and so on, progressively tensing and relaxing each set of muscles.

-Avoid eating within an hour of bedtime. Digesting food while you sleep makes you more likely to grind your teeth.

Do you grind you teeth?

Bruxism is when you clench (tightly hold your top and bottom teeth together) or grind (slide your teeth back and forth over each other) your teeth.
People can clench and grind without being aware of it during both the day and night, although sleep-related bruxism is often the bigger problem because it is harder to control.

Symptoms include:

•Depression
•Earache
•Eating disorders
•Headache
•Insomnia
•Sore or painful jaw

Year End Insurance Letter

Dear Patients:

This special message is being sent only to patients who have dental insurance. Most dental benefit plans have a fixed annual limit. If all the benefits are not used by the end of the year then these benefits are lost.

If you need your teeth cleaned or if you have postponed needed dental treatment, please call our office at 303-779-9876 to make an appointment before your 2010 dental benefits expire.

Sometimes it is possible to complete dental treatment in phases. One phase can be started before the end of 2010 to take advantage of you remaining benefits, and the next phase can be completed in 2011 when additional benefits are available to you. Depending on the circumstances, careful planning to maximize your dental benefits available at the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011 can provide you with significantly more reimbursement than postponing all treatment until next year.

Also, if you have already met you deductible in 2010, then you can proceed with needed dental treatment now, rather than waiting until next year and having to pay another deductible.

Please keep in mind that most dental benefit plans are based on a "use it or lose it" system. Don't let unused dental benefits expire at the end of the year. Call our office at 303-779-9876 to schedule an appointment.

Dr. Rippe & Katrina went to Iquitos, Peru on a mission trip this past June. They traveled with a group from Centura Health and Lifesource Community Church. They worked out of a clinic in Iquitos owned by People of Peru for 5 days. Katrina cleaned the teeth of 82 patients & Dr. Rippe treated over 50 patients. When to change your Toothbrush:

Toothbrushes become worn out after about 3 months and are not as effective as they once were. If you have gum disease, you should chance your toothbrush every 4-6 weeks because bacteria can harbor in the bristles. You should always rinse your toothbrush off with hot water after every use and change it after you have been sick.

Dental Problems Do Not Go Away Or Get Better Without Treatment...

Peru Mission Trip

My recent mission trip to Peru in July, was an experience I will never forget. Travelling with almost 60 people went surprisingly well. The conditions we worked in were less than ideal, but the opportunity to relieve pain for individuals who otherwise wouldn't have had relief were worth the temporary discomforts to me.

I enjoyed the opportunity to serve with my wife, Joanne; and friends Kim, Parker, Camille and Chloe as my assistants. We pulled over 90 teeth and treated over 40 patients. I also appreciated the help of medical team members helping at the end of days so that we could see more patients.

I will never forget the people I met in Peru and watching my son Danny embrace the experience and enjoy getting to know the Peruvians.

Periodontal Disease

Do Your Gums Bleed?

This is a symptom that may indicate the presence of Periodontal Disease, commonly known as Gum Disease.

We're learning more about this common infection all the time. I hope the following information will help you understand why I take gum disease seriously.

Some patients think sore gums aren't as important as tooth decay, but that's just not so. Gum disease begins as a minor infection and if it doesn't show signs of stabilizing is bound to get worse. Untreated it can eventually result in tooth loss.

In the early stages (gingivitis stage) the gums may be tender as a little bacteria pocket forms between your teeth and gums. The disease is very treatable at this point. But if the infected pockets are allowed to enlarge, this infection extends to the bond beneath, which begins to erode.

There's another reason to take gum disease seriously. The Journal of the American Dental Association recently reported on a study of non-smokers. Researchers found that gum disease was a stronger risk for heart disease than high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

My recommendation to all my patients is to get your teeth cleaned every 6 months; if you have active gum disease, more regular cleanings are necessary. If you have any futher questions, don't hesitate to contact my office.
